Refugee Welcome Centre
Refugees entering in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Ontario faced challenges for finding suitable housing that meets their needs, especially during COVID-19. Most of them have no money when arriving to Canada and have difficulties to find employment. Upon their arrival, IECC connect them with existing communities resources and shelters in Yarmouth, Edmunston and Prescott to help them access housing, food and healthcare. But, since March 2021, IECC is working on a project to open three new Refugee Welcome Centres in Halifax, Moncton and Ottawa with 30 beds each in October 2021 and that will provide multilingual settlement support to refugees. The centres will also offer English language training, childcare centre, meeting rooms, children after school tutoring, seniors computer training, Trauma and emotional psychological support and youth drop-in centre including an outdoor playground and family area. The new Refugee Welcome Centre will have capacity to house single and families refugees for 30 days while looking for apartments.
